If the first wonder of Jesus is that He is heir of all things, meaning He is Lord of all … the second would be that Jesus is Creator.
Heb 1:2 … through whom he made the universe.
It is always a good thing to remind yourself that God is Father, Son and Spirit, one true living God in three persons. The reason I say this is because over and over again we find that God did something, then the Bible says Jesus did it or it was done through Jesus. So, as Christians, when we say God created we are saying that the Father, the Son and the Spirit created … for they are One God! In Genesis 1 we read that God created. Yet, interestingly, we read:
Ge 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
The Spirit was active in creation. Later in the chapter, we read:
Ge 1:26 Then God said, “Let us make man in our image, in our likeness, and let them rule over the fish of the sea and the birds of the air, over the livestock, over all the earth, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.”
27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
In verse 26, God says, “Let us make man in our image” and in verse 27 the Bible says, “So God created man in his own image”. You see the “us” and the “our” there. Verse 2 and verses 26-27 are important in our understanding of God because these are the first clues we receive of God being Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Our text says:
Heb 1:2 … through whom he made the universe.
That is, the Father created everything that exists through the agency of the Son by the power of the Spirit. The word ‘made’ refers in specific to creation. So, there was nothing that existed:
Heb 11:3 By faith we understand that the universe was formed at God’s command, so that what is seen was not made out of what was visible.
This means that God spoke and out of His mouth came everything that exists … and it came at the speed of light! That is how awesome God is! He created the Universe … meaning every galaxy throughout all creation. And if there are other universes … God created them as well. Creation includes things like matter, content, time, space and conditions. It includes all its beauty and vastness … plus all the unfolding events over various periods of time. Creation also includes the whole plan of God from the first Adam to the last person to be born. Creation was God at work.
He created man to work … and He gifted and gifts every person with natural abilities (as well as giving every born again soul a spiritual gifts mix) to execute the work man needs to do. We are all different but we all have the ability to do some form of work. A young girl of about 9 or 10 in our church made little ornaments last week and handed them out to the Bible Study Group. She used her natural abilities and worked. Think of writing books, letters, scripts for a play or articles for a magazine, newspaper or radio. Think of cooking, gardening, painting, decorating, cleaning the house and arranging furniture. Think of sewing, be it to repair clothing or make clothing, knitting, darning or crocheting. The effort, energy and time you used doing any of the above results in you looking at what you worked at … and you look at it and you are happy, proud and have that fulfilled … satisfied feeling at your accomplishment.
Now consider this … there was absolutely nothing, God spoke and it was! And on the evening of the sixth day God considers His creation and …
Ge 1:31 God saw all that he had made, and it was very good.
He was satisfied. He was fulfilled. He was happy. He was proud … in fact, He was delighted with His creative work. It was not just good, it was “very good”. What is the purpose of Creation? Surely it must be to give God glory!
Ps 19:1 The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of his hands.
I am certain you can tell me where you have been and what you have seen. I love the beauty of the sea, the forests, the lakes, the hills, the mountains and the bush. On one occasion in 2004 our children took us into the mountains the United Arab Emirates. This is desert and mountain … yet the beauty was spectacular with its various colours of sand and rock giving exquisite attraction to the mountains. What about the night sky as you look at the ‘starry hosts’ (Is 40:26)? Creation, including man, exists for the glory of God. But Creation also exists to make God known. You can know there is a God without ever having heard the Gospel!
Ro 1:20 For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
Not only can you known there is a God through Creation but you can know this God through Creation. Now here is the exciting thing about everything above … our text says:
Heb 1:2 … through whom he made the universe.
Jesus Christ, God the Son, is Creator!
Jn 1:1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. 2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made.
So as we consider the identity of the Lord Jesus, firstly He is “heir” … He is Lord of all … and secondly He is Creator of all. He loves His Creation. It pleases Him; it gives Him joy; it reveals Him … and it brings Him glory! Again you can see why you cannot separate the Father, Son and Spirit. All are active participants in Creation … and in everything God does. Is it not wonderful that you can pray to the Lord Jesus about everything, especially about yourself, because He created you? He knows you and is able to meet your varied needs.
Dear Lord Jesus, help me never to become confused about whom You are. I have clearly seen in Your Word today that You are God, together with the Father and the Holy Spirit … One, True, Living and Eternal God. Thank You for the wonder of eyes to see Your Creation, hands to touch and feel as well as ears to hear. Help me, Lord, to appreciate Your Creation more and to use those aspects of Creation available to me for Your Glory. Amen.
